Leadership Purpose with Dr. Robin

Nov 9, 2022

Susan Salenger is a researcher and author of the book, “Sidelined: How Women Manage and Mismanage Their Health.” It explores the barriers women face in getting the best medical care.

Susan’s research reveals how conflicted many women are about the medical decisions they ultimately make.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Susan attended UCLA to study English. After graduation, she worked alongside her husband Fred for 25 years at their production company, Salenger Films, which produced corporate training and development films distributed worldwide.

Today, at age 80, Susan lives in Northern California to be near her incredible family which includes her two daughters, four grandchildren, a cat named Max and a dog named JD (Salenger). When she is not speaking about her book or spending time with family and friends, you will find Susan power lifting to stay in shape.

In this episode we discussed:

  • Why it’s sometimes so difficult for women to get an accurate diagnosis
  • The ways in which women often put their own health last, behind the needs of their families
  • Research that shows that illness often makes some women feel guilty for becoming ill in the first place
  • What women should do when they are conflicted about the medical decisions they make
  • How to get a valuable resource directory that offers a variety of services to help women decide the best path to follow
